Short animated movie project.

I was recently contacted by friend Rachid Bouslam to help him on a project he has.

This is an animated short movie about a kid living in a post-apocalyptic world in which air is not breathable again, and oxygen is a limited commodity held by big enterprises.

The goal was to create some art, so my friend could present it to people at Annecy Festival, to get money so he could go further with his project and fully realize it.

Here are some characters I helped to create.

 

Girouette (weathercock)

Il y a quelques mois, mes amis de l'association Le Plus Petit Cirque Du Monde, m'ont contacté pour dessiner la girouette qu'ils voulaient installer sur leur tout nouveau chapiteau.

Il m'a fallu travailler étroitement avec l'artisan girouettier Bernard Girard pour adapter le dessin afin qu'il soit réalisable.

Ca n'a pas été une mince affaire car les girouettes ont des contraintes particulières auquelles je n'avais pas pensé.

Un bon nombre de personnes devaient donner leur accord. Il a fallu que le dessin convienne à tout le monde, ce qui n'a pas été facile.

Au final, ce fut un travail très intéressant et agréable à faire. J'ai eu beaucoup de plaisir à travailler avec Bernard Girard et à le rencontrer, car c'est un homme incroyable, qui a beaucoup d'humour.

Ce fut aussi bien évidemment un plaisir incommensurable de participer à ce projet avec le PPCM, et d'avoir une occasion de les remercier pour tout ce qu'ils ont fait pour moi (qu'ils le sachent ou non) quand j'étais plus jeune, et pour toutes les choses admirables et le bien qu'ils font pour tout le monde.

A few month ago, I was contacted by friends from association Le Plus Petit Cirque Du Monde to draw the weathercock they were planning to put on top of their brand new circus tent.

I had to work closely with artist weathercock maker Bernard Girard, to see if the drawing was possible to be made.

It was not easy to achieve, since weathercocks have peculiar constraints that I had no idea of or wouldn't have thought of.

Also, many people were responsible for it, so the design had to go through everybody, which took time and efforts.

In the end, this was a really interesting and fun work to do. I was really pleased to meet and work with Bernard Girard, who is an amazing person, and has a lot of humour.

I was also, of course, more than pleased to participate to this project with the PPCM, and to have an occasion to give something back to them for all that they have done for me (that they know it or not) when I was younger, and for all the good they do and all the awesome things they achieve for people.

Here is another batch of concepts for my sci-fi female character. Maybe I will do another round before choosing, still not quite sure about my fav.

So far I like the helmet on 20 and legs and belly on 22.

Some quick concepts for a female sci-fi/robot/whatever character. I will continue drawing some until I find something interesting and refine it.

I have drawn helmets and bodies separately to be a bit more free about the shapes, mix them in the end and have more ideas.

So far my favourite helmets would be 9, 10 and 18.

My favourite body armors woud be... 10, 11, 16 and 17, I guess.

RedBubble Store

J'ai enfin créé un compte sur le site RedBubble.

C'est un site d'achat en ligne de divers produits (t-shirts, cartes, posters, stickers, ...), qui permet à des artistes de mettre en ligne des oeuvres pour divers supports. Le site fixe un prix de base à chaque produit, qui inclut l'impression, l'envoie, etc. puis une marge définie par l'artiste lui-même.

Donc j'ai créé un magasin, et ai enfin ajouté mes premiers designs, qui ne sont disponibles que pour des t-shirts pour l'instant, mais d'autres suivront, et probablement sur d'autres supports.

I finally created an account on the website RedBubble.

It's an online store for various products (t-shirts, cards, posters, stickers, ...) and that allows artists to put online works for varied mediums. The website decides of a base price to each product including printing fees, sending fees, etc. and a margin decided by the artist himself.

So I've created my online store, and finally added my first designs. They are available only on t-shirts for now, but I am planning on adding more, and probably on other mediums.

Woot.Shirt Derby #338 : Metallic Inks - Fail

Donc le sujet pour ce derby #338 de Woot.Shirt ne devait utiliser qu'une seule encre : Or métallique ou Argent métallique.

So, the goal for this Woot.Shirt derby #338 was to use only one ink : Metallic Gold or Metallic Silver.

Voilà, simple référence à la scène du début du film Indiana Jones, Les aventuriers de l'Arche Perdue !

So this is  a simple reference to the beginning scene from movie Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark !

Woot.Shirt Derby #336 : Days of the week - Fail

Bon, au départ le sujet me parlait pas trop, du coup j'ai attendu un peu voir ce que les gens disaient à ce propos, et c'est comme ça que j'ai connu Taco Tuesday.  Je ne sais pas d'où ça vient exactement, si ce n'est que ça a l'air plutôt connu aux Etats-Unis. Je pense que c'est une journée promotion démocratisée par la chaine de tacos Taco Bell, mais pas sûr.

Il y a une citation directe à une peinture française célèbre, peut-être trouverez-vous laquelle. :)

Ce design a eu un succès relatif (bien plus que mes précédents en tout cas !). Je met en cause les tronches "mignones" des tacos, et le fait que les gens (sur Woot en tout cas) ont l'air de bien aimer les tacos.

So, at first I wasn't sure what to do about this theme, so I waited a bit to see what people were saying, and this is how I discovered Taco Tuesday. I am not sure where it comes from exactly, but it seems well known in the United States. It may be a promotional day created by Taco Bell, but I am not sure.

This is a direct quote of a well known french painting. Maybe you will find which. :)

This one had a relative success (far more than my previous ones at least !). I think it is due to the "cute" faces of the tacos, and the fact that people (at least on Woot) seem to greatly enjoy tacos.

Une fois n'est pas coutume, j'ai réussi à faire deux designs pour ce derby !  Celui-ci fait référence au jour Bloody Sunday, le dimanche 30 janvier 1972 en Irelande. Bon, évidemment, il y a eu plein de Bloody Sundays dans l'histoire, mais celui-ci est probablement plus connu du fait du morceau Sunday Bloody Sunday de U2. C'est aussi un jeu de mot sur le déssert glacé Sundae (dont l'étymologie est incertaine). Voilà, c'est mignon/rigolo et ça a pas mal plu. Il manquait peut-être un petit quelque chose, mais quoi ?

It's not everyday I manage to draw 2 designs for one derby ! This one refers to Bloody Sunday, sunday january 30th 1972 in Ireland. There has been obviously plenty of Bloody Sundays during history, butt his one is probably well known thanks to the music Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2. There is a play on words with the ice desert Sundae (which the origin is unknown). So, it's cutey/funney and it had some success. Maybe it lacked something to be truly great, but what ?

Comme on m'a pas mal fait de réflexions sur le premier design (apparemment on ne comprenait pas que les katanas sont des katanas), j'ai décidé d'en faire un avec DES HACHES. Puis je me suis dit que quand même, merde, on aurait aussi bien pu me dire la même chose sur celui-ci, donc j'ai finalement posté le premier, parce que les katanas c'est plus rigolo que les haches.

As I had a lot of feedback on the first design (it was not clear enough that those were katanas apparently), so I decided to draw one with AXES. Then I told myself that, damn, someone would eventually tell me the same thing about this one, so I ended up submitting the first one, because katanas are way funnier than axes.

Woot.Shirt Derby #335 : Lovecraft - Fail

Je voulais rester simple pour celui-ci, avec un design de Cthulhu, mais je suppose qu'il manque un petit quelque chose pour le rendre vraiment bien. Une deuxième couleur ? Plus de détail ? Ca reste un dessin que j'aime bien malgré tout.

I wanted to keep it simple on this one with a Cthulhu design, but I suppose it's lacking something to be really great. Maybe a second color ? or more details ? But overall I like it much.

Woot.Shirt Derby #332 : Evolution - Fail

Soumission pour le derby #332 sur l'évolution.
Rien de particulier, on parle d'évolution en général. Il y a eu beaucoup de très beaux designs.

Nothing special about it, just talking about evolution in general. There were a lot of very beautiful designs.

La double référence est faite à l'évolution d'Homo Erectus en Homo Sapiens (manifestement !) et au jeu Pokemon, dans lequel on fait évoluer les monstres.
Pas forcément hyper créatif, ni beau, et pas réellement drôle. J'ai pas été très inspiré, et il y avait plein d'autres designs très drôles ou jolis. Référence peut-être trop ciblée aussi.

Double reference made to the evolution of Homo Erectus into Homo Sapiens (obviously !) and to the Pokemon video game, in which you make monsters evolve.
This was not really creative, nor beautiful, and not really funny. I was not really inspired on this one, and there was a lot of other far nicer and funnier designs. Also, the reference may have been a bit too narrowly aimed.

Woot.Shirt Derby #331 : Album Cover & TV SHow Mash-Ups - Fail

Le but était donc de retrouver dans le design une pochette d'album et une référence à une série.

The goal was to recognize in the design an album cover and a reference to a TV show.

La pochette en question est celle de Wish You Were Here, de Pink Floyd.

La série télé est X-Files.

Raisons de l'échec ?

A mon avis, la pochette n'est pas assez connue du grand public, et la référence pas assez marquée (même s'il n'y a pas forcément 15 000 séries avec des soucoupes volantes).

L'image est probablement trop complexe aussi, et même si je la trouve jolie, pas assez frappante pour un t-shirt.

Why didn't it work ?

My guess is, this cover is not that know by the general audience, and the reference not strong enough (even if there is not necessarily a thousand tv shows about flying saucers).

The picture is probably  too complicated, and even if I find it beautiful, not striking enough for a t-shirt.
